Volunteer of the Month -- February

T.A. Miller and her daughter Verona

T. A., mother of 3rd grader Verona in Mrs. McCammon’s class, is the ODC PTA’s Volunteer of the Month for February.  This is their second year at ODC.  T. A. has put in countless hours in school and at home this year.  She is currently in charge of all of the afterschool clubs at ODC.  This is a huge job.  The PTA afterschool club program involves almost 400 students in 24 different club sessions.  Each session has an instructor, at least one coordinator and many parent volunteers that all come together with T.A. to make this wonderful program a success.  According to T.A., she is far from alone in making these programs work; however, without T. A. stepping up to coordinate all these clubs, the program may not have continued on this year.

When she is not volunteering at ODC her and her family likes to travel.   She and her husband, Mike, spent 20 years in the Naval Submarine forces. They have lived in Hawaii, Florida, and Verona, Italy before moving to Virginia Beach and retiring here last year.  She claims to be a chocoholic and a foodie.

T. A. is an invaluable asset to ODC in many ways and we are lucky to have her as a part of the ODC family.

In honor of T.A., we are donating Puppies – a snapshot picture library to the ODC Library.

Volunteer of the Month -- December

This month we are celebrating the hard work and dedication of Chikako Loree! Chikako’s daughter Nina is a 5

th grader in Mrs. Parker’s class. Chikako is volunteering in as many major events at the school as she can as this is her daughter’s last year here at ODC.

Along with being the PTA Treasurer and the Knitting Club Coordinator, Chikako also helps out with the Thursday packets. She finds volunteering to be fun and has had an instrumental role in keeping the programs that we have at ODC running smoothly.

When Chikako is not volunteering for the school, she is working with her husband on their family business. Her husband is a General Contractor and Chikako does all of the bookkeeping.

In Chikako's free time she enjoys scrap booking and card making. In addition she loves reading and music. We will be donating a book to the library on Chikako's behalf about Barbie celebrating her 50th anniversary by Jennie D'Amato.

Thank you for all you do for our school Chikako!!

Volunteer of the Month--November

Audra Dement is our deserving Volunteer for the Month for November! Audra was chosen because she is regularly seen working and helping around the ODC campus. She is the proud parent of Lilly Dement, a second grade student in Mrs. Buhner's class. Audra knows first hand how the opportunities that ODC offers benefit students as she too was an ODC eagle from 1989 until 1994!

Audra keeps her volunteer schedule jam packed and stated that, "Volunteering is her way of saying thank you to the individuals and organizations that she is the most grateful for having in her family's life." She is the Chair of the Commission at Old Donation Episcopal Day School, the Assistant Minister at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, and a King's daughter with Circle by the Bay which helps to raise funds for CHKD.

She is also the room parent for Mrs. Buhner's class and has enjoyed every opportunity to be involved at ODC. You will see Audra around the halls making copies, organizing books, and participating in the science labs and other class activities. She will be assisting in the Winter Wonderland program and will work closely with other parents to help organize the upcoming family dance. Audra commented that Volunteerism is simply her way of saying thank you to a program that I admire and appreciate.

We will donating the book "A Little Princess" by Francis Hodgson Burnett to the library in honor of Audra's hard work and dedication to ODC.

Thank you Audra for all of your valuable contributions!!

In June of 2011, ODC PTA was awarded a Communications Excellence award from the Virginia State PTA at the annual State Leadership Conference in Glen Allen, Virginia. We were recognized for our communications efforts via our website, newsletter and in-school by receiving first place in the Specialty School division. Our PTA has instituted a "Going Green" initiative and all of our communications are electronic. Our PTA mailing list allows us to reach all of our members with important news and events instantly without the waste of paper and printing costs! A big thank you goes out to our former PTA Board led by Jill Campbell (PTA President 2010-2011), Joy Manock (PTA Secretary and Newsletter Chair) and Alice Liu (Parent Volunteer) for their tireless work and efforts to improve our Communications program!
